“한반도가 어떻게 만들어졌는지 직접 볼 수는 없지만 암석을 들여다보면 한반도의 역사가 고스란히 남아있다.”

​

 나는 에클로자이트 발견을 어제 일처럼 생생하게 기억한다. 당시 국내에서 에클로자이트가 발견된 적이 없었다. 홍성지역 야외조사 후 채취한 암석 박편에서 에클로자이트로 추정되는 박편을 보고 설레어 잠을 잘 수가 없었다. 그 박편으로부터 에클로자이트를 확인할 수 있는 옴파사이트(omphacite) 광물을 발견했을 때의 환희는 잊을 수가 없다. 그것은 지질학자로서의 내 인생의 새로운 전환점이자 한반도 지질 해석의 새로운 장이 열리는 순간이었다.
